Scott McTominay insists the players are behind Man United manager Erik ten Hag after holding Liverpool to a goalless draw at Anfield.
Ten Hag’s side succeeded where 34 previous opponents had failed in keeping out a team which finished the game with five attacking players on the pitch and Trent Alexander-Arnold playing as the central fulcrum.
The visitors offered little in the way of threat themselves as their goal drought on enemy territory extended to 507 minutes, stretching back five years, but they at least stemmed the bleeding which had seen them concede 21 times in the last five meetings home and away.
McTominay who was named captain with Bruno Fernandes suspended and Harry Maguire injured, was happy to secure a point.
He said: ‘We’ve got a number of injuries. We knew it was going to be tough. We had to stay calm and stick together. We’re a bit disappointed we can’t have shots but we’re pleased not to lose.

‘It’s always a hot start when you come here, we can’t forget about last year. The young players conducted themselves well.
‘It’s the biggest honour of my career captaining this club once and then twice. I’m thankful to be in this position.
‘You never know in football, there’s always things that can happen. I do my best, I don’t care what anyone else thinks.’
McTominay won the toss prior to kick-off and switched ends to make Liverpool kick towards the Kop in the first-half.
He added: ‘Mix it up a bit (turn Liverpool around at kick off).
‘It’s been extremely difficult, it takes balls to come out and play for this club. The ones who are injured are desperate to come back and perform.

‘I said we’re behind the manager, he’s a great manager who can lead us to great things. I think this is a building block as well.’
Roy Keane was impressed with McTominay on Sunday.
He said: ‘He did well, he won the toss, he’s had his critics but they stuck together. At some stage you have to give them credit. The problems are still there but Scott’s done well.
‘They were up against it. Liverpool still have to produce moments which they didn’t. That lack of quality, decision making. United had a little bit of luck. United will have to be delighted with a draw. It’s a start but the problems are still there. We were worried before the game but you’ve still got to go and perform.’
