Mauricio Pochettino sends Jurgen Klopp advice as subtle dig made in VAR row

England wrongly believed that the on-field officials had allowed Luis Diaz’s goal to stand against Spurs, confirming the decision as “check complete”. He soon realised that the strike had been incorrectly ruled out for offside but failed to communicate the error to referee Simon Hooper.

Klopp said in the week that he would like the game, which Liverpool lost 2-1, to be replayed. However, Chelsea head coach Pochettino believes the German should have stopped proceedings at the time.

Asked if England’s ban from Liverpool matches sets a dangerous precendent, the Argentine said: “I don’t know. For sure it was mistake. I don’t know if it’s the right decision. I cannot say something different because I cannot put myself in Liverpool position, or VAR referee.

“I listened, I think we all did in this country, it is a difficult situation, it is abuot focus, concentration. Some action can happen in a second. Like when we drive something can happen on the motorway. Mistakes can happen because sometimes you can lose focus and the consequences happen.

“It’s going to be a precedent? I don’t know. Too many things you don’t know how you are going to react. Maybe I stop the game if I was Klopp. The VAR are embarrassed and the opponents so happy.”

Pochettino also appeared to take a general dig at the path the narrative has taken since England’s error. The 51-year-old pointed out that it was simply a human mistake.

Asked if he trusts VAR, the former Spurs tactician responded: I trust in the car but the driver…

“I was very critical from the beginning many years ago. The technology of whether it is across the line to keep, and the offside also. Then we can discuss whether the referee needs the last say. I can’t understand all the situations, I can’t understand why the situation you ask about today.

“Human mistakes can happen. When a refree makes a mistake we can accept. When technology is involved it is difficult to understand but we cannot complain. It is not easy and I cannot understand all of the people talking about one thing or another. For me it is about simplifying the situation.

“The most important is to give the power more to the referee. To accept when he is fouled because sometimes in life perception is different. It is really tricky when you see the action through VAR, with some situations make bigger but sometimes people who play football know it’s what you see in the image. But offside and goal line they are the two to keep.

“Then it’s about penalties, some action to judge in the game, it is for the referee. At the moment we are not happy with var, the people in charge and the worse we are not happy with the referee. One step back may make things easier and more clear.”
