Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed Mason Greenwood is back in contention for Manchester United ’s clash with West Brom this weekend after missing nine days of training through illness.

Greenwood, 19, has not featured for United since their 2-1 defeat away at Istanbul Basaksehir on November 4, wherein he came on as a late substitute out in Turkey.

It has proved a difficult second full season at Old Trafford for the academy graduate, who burst onto the scene last term and scored 17 goals in a memorable debut campaign.

However, Solskjaer has revealed Greenwood has been battling an illness over the last fortnight, tipping him to rediscover his best form once he is fully fit again.

“You have to take a step back sometimes,” he said.

“The boy's only 19, he's had a fantastic year, but if we go a year back I left him out of the Carabao Cup game against Chelsea.

“Mason stayed behind and played against Doncaster in the Checkatrade Trophy for game-time, so that's how far he's come.

“He's got 19 goals in total, made his England debut, scored in his first Under-21s game and the headlines are going to be about when he scores and why he doesn't play.

“Everyone's allowed to not be well. He's been away eight or nine days from training, but I have no doubts about him. He has a very good head on him and the talent is there for all to see.”

Solskjaer will be without three players for the visit of West Brom on Saturday, with the United boss adding: “The short version is it's Luke Shaw, Jesse Lingard and Phil Jones. They are the only ones who didn't join in parts of the training today.

“Some are in different stages after internationals, recoveries and working back after fitness, and we'll make a decision tonight.

“But most of them have joined in today and yesterday, so it's looking good.

“Some of them are probably doubts. Marcus [Rashford] joined for the first time today, so hopefully there's no reaction there, it was Eric Bailly's first day back today, so no, and Victor [Lindelof], we'll have to check tomorrow, because his back is not great.”
