Martin Odegaard reveals Real Madrid's decision over Arsenal return

Martin Odegaard has dealt a blow to Arsenal’s transfer hopes by revealing that Real Madrid are planning to keep him for the new season.

The 22-year-old made just nine appearances for Madrid last term before he was allowed to join Arsenal on loan in the January transfer window.

Odegaard flourished under Mikel Arteta and Arsenal have been keen to sign the Norway international on a permanent deal this summer.

But the midfielder has confirmed that Madrid have told him he is part of their plans for the upcoming campaign.

‘Real Madrid have been clear that they would like me back,’ Odegaard said in an interview with Norwegian television channel TV 2.

‘So then it will be time to go there when the training starts up again.

‘Of course it has always been a dream to play there. I have been in the club for over six years now, and that has always been the goal.

‘I always want to play, I have said that all the time. Playing hard is important.’

Asked if he has spoken with Carlo Ancelotti, who has been appointed as Zinedine Zidane’s replacement, Odegaard replied: ‘No, not with him personally, but I have spoken a lot with the club and had a close contact. So I feel they have a good overview.’

Speaking last month, Arteta made it clear that he wanted Odegaard to remain at Arsenal for at least another season.

‘We’ve tried to make everything that we could to get Martin performing for the team, which I think he’s done, and he has adapted really well to our way of playing and to our football club,’ said the Arsenal manager.

‘Hopefully we have given him the hope and the feeling that this could be a good place for him.’
