Martin Keown has admitted that he used to pinch Chris Sutton during his playing days at Arsenal, after the former Blackburn star revealed the defender did everything he could to get under his skin.

When prompted by Daily Mail Football Editor Ian Ladyman to respond to Sutton’s claims, the Gunners legend joked that he could always ‘dominate’ the striker by getting ‘under his skin’.

Keown, who marshalled Arsenal to three Premier League titles in 1998, 2002 and 2004, revealed to Sportsmail that he used to ‘draw out venom’ from his opponents by frequently jabbing at them on the pitch.

Ladyman spoke to Keown during Sportsmail and MailPlus‘ daily videocast ‘World Cup Confidential’. It appears on MailOnline every morning of the tournament and can be found on our YouTube channel.

The ex-Arsenal defender admitted: ‘I sometimes did use that little pinch just to draw out a little bit of venom from my opponent.

‘Chris was actually quite a calm person but once you got under his skin, you could dominate him.

‘He liked to back in, stand all over me, which brought a little pinch every now and again. Actually, I got the idea off a European player, playing in European football, somebody was stamping on me, pinching me, grabbing at me.

‘You’ve got to do these things sometimes to test your opponents, and Chris was one you could get under his skin, that’s for sure.’

Both of Sportsmail’s columnists enjoyed fruitful careers, with Sutton helping Blackburn to their first and only Premier League title in 1995.

Adding to his three Premier League trophies, Keown also led Arsenal to FA Cup success in 1998, 2002 and 2003.

At the end of the videocast, Ladyman joked he would ask Sutton to respond to Keown’s comments when he returns to World Cup Confidential.
