Manuel Pellegrini says West Ham’s style has got the fans behind them

Manuel Pellegrini believes West Ham’s supporters have stuck with the team despite poor results because of their quality of football.

Before West Ham’s 4-2 win over Burnley, Pellegrini’s side were just three points above the relegation zone after winning only two of their opening 10 Premier League matches.

However, a double from Felipe Anderson and strikes from Marko Arnautovic and Javier Hernandez, ensured that they came out on top in a topsy-turvy clash against Burnley at the London Stadium.

Speaking post-match, Pellegrini said: “We could have scored more goals but the most important thing is that we won the game because if you review all of the other games we have had the same feeling – playing well, creating chances, they create few chances in our box… we have been really unlucky but we’ve always trusted in what we are doing.

“Today to score four goals, we had a clear four or five other chances, maybe we should have a penalty too. I think that is the kind of football that the fans enjoy which is why I think even with the bad results, I always felt that the fans were behind the team because they knew we were playing well and that the results would come sooner or later.”

Before the match, Pellegrini had demanded more from West Ham’s club-record signing Anderson, saying he was ‘not happy’ with the Brazilian winger’s contribution following his £42m move from Lazio in the summer.

Pellegrini got the reaction he had hoped for as Anderson scored twice, while the manager also praised 20-year-old Grady Diangana for his electric display on the opposite flank.

Asked whether it was Anderson’s best game for the club, Pellegrini said: “Of course, if you score two goals and are involved in the other two goals and miss two goals more with the crossbar and one where the defender intercepted the ball, it is difficult to repeat those games every week in the Premier League.”

On Dianganga, he added: “He’s a technical player and always the technical players can make a difference. He didn’t score but he was involved in a couple of goals, Felipe Anderson as well. Maybe he needed some time to understand the Premier League but both of them created a lot of chances for Marko [Arnautovic] and Javier Hernandez.”
