Manchester United are yet to make a bid for Denis Zakaria, it has been claimed. The Borussia Monchengladbach star has been linked with a move to Old Trafford since the start of the January transfer window. Yet despite Ralf Rangnick admiring the player, there’s no guarantee he’ll move to the Premier League this month.

Manchester United have endured a wretched season so far, struggling for consistency under both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.

One issue for both the club and their managers has been their midfield, with the likes of Scott McTominay, Fred, Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek all toiling.

With that being the case, some expect United to make a move for a new midfielder in this month’s transfer window.

Wolves’ Ruben Neves has been linked, especially after he sparkled in Wolves’ 1-0 win over Rangnick’s team last week.

Marseille’s Boubacar Kamara and RB Leipzig’s Amadou Haidara have also emerged as potential targets.

But so too has Zakaria, who has been a consistent performer for Monchengladbach ever since moving from Young Boys back in 2017.

The Switzerland international has also been linked with a move to Liverpool, despite Jurgen Klopp’s team having an abundance of midfield talent.

Yet Fabrizio Romano has told The United Stand that, when it comes to landing Zakaria, United are yet to make a bid.

However, they have discussed signing the 25-year-old as they look to turn their campaign around.

And that means there’s a possibility United will increase their interest and make an official offer by the end of the month.

Zakaria’s current contract over in Germany expires in the summer, when he’ll then become a free agent.

And United could certainly do a lot worse as they look to improve and finally end their wait for silverware going forward.

Pogba’s likely departure will open up a hole in the squad, with the World Cup winner also out of contract come July.

United may also sell Van de Beek, too, who has rarely started since his arrival from Ajax in 2020.

When it comes to January signings, the Red Devils have a mixed record over the years.

Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra both arrived in 2006 and went on to have glittering careers at the club, winning a combined total of 10 Premier League titles.

Bruno Fernandes has also been a huge hit following his own move to Old Trafford back in the January transfer window of 2020.

But Alexis Sanchez, Manucho, Bebe and Zoran Tosic all fall into the flop category.

Odion Ighalo, too, didn’t live up to expectations when he moved to United on loan two years ago.

So United will likely weigh everything up before making a final decision on any potential Zakaria deal.

Speaking at the start of the month, meanwhile, Rangnick was coy when quizzed on the likelihood of new signings.

“[It’s] too early now,” he said.

“The current squad is big enough, with a lot of competition in the squad.

“To speak about future players coming into the club doesn’t make sense at this stage when we have to find out which player is in which position, the best possible solution for every game.

“Right now for me, it doesn’t make sense to think about future players.

“My full focus is on the current squad and to find for each game the best possible formation and line-up.”
