Manchester United legends including Gary Neville and Brian Kidd have joined the current squad and signed messages of condolence in memory of Sir Bobby Charlton. 

The Manchester United and England legend sadly passed away at the age of 86 on Saturday after a battle with dementia.

His legendary status in English football resulted in tributes flooding in over the weekend and United have also been discussing commemorative plans with UEFA and Charlton’s family ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League clash against FC Copenhagen at Old Trafford.

United opened their book of condolence to the public on Sunday following their Premier League win over Sheffield United the previous evening and thousands of supporters flocked to the club’s stadium to pay their respects. 

Just like the current team and boss Erik Ten Hag, some Manchester United greats have also paid emoitonal tributes to a much-loved man.

Manchester United legend Paddy Crerand signs his message for former teamate Charlton

Charlton was a Manchester United and England icon, and was known all around the globe

Brian Kidd and Paddy Crerand, who won the European Cup alongside Sir Bobby in 1968, were at Old Trafford on Monday to share their memories of the United and England icon.

Wes Brown and Gary Neville, products of United’s youth academy with over 900 appearances for the club between them, also showed their appreciation for Sir Bobby and everything he contributed to the club over the years.

Neville wrote: ‘The greatest English footballer and the greatest ambassador for English football,’ 

‘The epitome of what a Manchester United player is: honesty, courage, hard work, loyalty and talent!

‘The Busby Babes are my heroes and I hope you are all hugging each other right now.

‘Thank you isn’t enough for how much you have done for our great club.’

Crerand said a touching tribute after writing his message: ‘He was a gentleman of the highest quality, although on the pitch he never stopped moaning!’

‘I remember saying to him one day: ‘Bobby, we can’t do the things you can do. If we could play like you, we would be delighted!

‘If you went anywhere and mentioned Bobby Charlton, people would know exactly who you’re talking about.’
