Manchester United could sell Paul Pogba and offload Edinson Cavani to raise funds for Erling Haaland, according to reports. The Borussia Dortmund striker is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s top transfer target. But signing him won’t be easy, with Europe’s elite also in the mix for his signature.
Manchester United want a new striker.
They’ve seen Cavani enjoy a positive season at Old Trafford but, with injuries catching up with the veteran, are eyeing a move for a new striker.
Solskjaer has been privately unhappy with the form of Anthony Martial this term, with the France international scoring just four Premier League goals.
And while Mason Greenwood represents the future of the club, it’s still too premature for him to lead the line on a weekly basis.
As a result, United are eyeing Haaland.
They came close to signing the Borussia Dortmund star before his move to the Westfalenstadion in January 2020, blaming Mino Raiola for that deal’s collapse.

And the Manchester Evening News say United could bankroll a transfer for Solskjaer’s dream target by getting Cavani and Pogba off the wage bill.
That would free up £450,000-a-week’s worth of cash and that money could be used to entice Haaland to Old Trafford.
United are stalling on a new deal for Cavani because of injuries, while the player’s father, Luis, recently suggested his son wouldn’t be renewing his current contract.
“My son does not feel comfortable in England and wants to be close to the family again,” he said.
“Edinson is going to end up playing in South America.

“I want Edinson to play in a team that fights for something important.
“Edinson had many conversations with Riquelme and he would like to play for Boca. He was always seduced by the idea of playing in Boca.
“If he returns to South America he is leaning towards Boca. By the middle of the year he will return to South America.
“My son’s idea is not to continue there, he wants to return.”
As for Pogba, the United midfielder’s contract expires in the summer of 2022.
And that means the Red Devils need to sell the midfielder at the end of the campaign in order to prevent him from leaving the Theatre of Dreams for nothing.
Juventus appear to be the current frontrunners in the race to sign Pogba, five years after he quit Old Trafford for a return to the Premier League.
But Real Madrid can’t be discounted, with Zinedine Zidane known to be a huge admirer of his compatriot.
Meanwhile, former United striker Michael Owen has admitted he’d love to see the club sign Haaland – who he believes should be the priority over a new centre-back to go alongside Harry Maguire.
“A top centre forward I think,” he said recently.
“I would like to see pace alongside Harry Maguire because then I think it changes the whole dynamic.
“If they could start defending one vs one, two vs two than that changes the whole dynamic of a team. I don’t think they can do that.
“They tried to do that against Tottenham earlier in the season and basically they’ve been scared stiff of committing bodies forward since.
“They tend to be a bit more pragmatic, they never tend to beat teams four or five-nil.
“But if I had one position though it would be a centre forward, right down the middle. There’s one on everyone’s lips at the minute which every team actually need.
“Haaland is the name in question and virtually every big team a the moment needs a centre forward. He is going to be hot property when and if he becomes available.”
