Manchester United dressing room ‘infuriated’ by Erik ten Hag’s Casemiro comment

What has gone wrong at Man Utd?

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag faces a fight to keep the dressing room together after making a miserable start to the season. His brutally honest approach to media interviews may not be helping his cause, however, as some players reportedly took issue with the Dutchman’s criticism of Casemiro last month.

Ten Hag hauled the Brazilian off at half-time against Brentford with United trailing Mathias Jensen’s opener. When asked why, he bluntly stated that he wanted to see ‘more football’.

Sure enough, a midfield reshuffle ended up winning the game as Scott McTominay scored twice in stoppage time to seal a 2-1 victory. But according to The Athletic, calling out Casemiro in the manner he did went down like a lead balloon among United players.

The 31-year-old was one of the Red Devils’ most dependable stars last season, helping Ten Hag to an FA Cup final and a third-place Premier League finish.

But his performances have tailed off dramatically this term, and he was once again taken off at the interval in the heavy defeat to Newcastle United on Wednesday, although Ten Hag claimed that injury forced his hand.

The United boss may need to tread carefully over the coming weeks if he is to avoid losing the dressing room. Some players are reportedly beginning to ‘doubt’ his management style, while there is also believed to be an overarching lack of togetherness in the squad.

Casemiro is not the only player to be on the receiving end of Ten Hag’s public criticism. Back in September, Jadon Sancho was left out of the matchday squad for a game against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, with the manager claiming that it was due to a lack of effort in training.

Sancho took issue with the comments and released an angry social media statement, in which he claimed to be fed up of being made a ‘scapegoat’. The 23-year-old has been banished from first-team training ever since.

Ten Hag is under pressure to keep his job after overseeing consecutive 3-0 defeats. Manchester City and Newcastle both ran riot at Old Trafford over the past week, piling extra importance on this weekend’s clash with Fulham.

United are rumoured to be eyeing up Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim as a potential replacement for Ten Hag, should he fail to inspire a turnaround in results and harmony in the dressing room.
