Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has told is old club to change Paul Pogba’s position to get the best out of him. France saw the best and the worst of the midfielder at Euro 2020 after crashing out to Switzerland in the Round of 16. It comes as the former Juventus star’s future comes under the microscope yet again.
United star Pogba has been told he should have his position changed in the Red Devils set-up.
That comes from club legend Rooney, who knows a thing or two about moving around in a team’s formation.
The 28-year-old was hoping to take France to glory at Euro 2020, as he and several others did in the World Cup three years ago in Russia.
However, Didier Deschamps side were sent crashing out of the competition in the first knockout stage after relinquishing a two-goal lead to Switzerland to lose on penalties.
With question marks surrounding his future, Pogba’s situation at United looks far from sustainable but Rooney believes he would better suited dropping deeper in midfield.
“Like a lot of people, I fancied the French to be champions and as a team they were a massive disappointment,” Rooney wrote in his Sunday Times column.
“That was a particular shame for Paul Pogba. He had been the player of the tournament until they went out.
“Some of the passes Paul played for Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappe were incredible.
“It helped him to have N’Golo Kante as his midfield partner but I think the biggest reason that Paul’s performances were so good was his positioning.
“In all France’s games, he was playing deeper than we normally see him for Manchester United and this meant that he was able to pick the ball up in areas of the pitch where he had the time and room to pick a pass.”
Pogba has been linked with an exit from United this summer with Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain interested.
It comes as he enters the final year of his contract, which could see him leave for nothing in 2022 if the Red Devils do not sell him this year.
The midfielder’s agent Mino Raiola has frequently spoke out on his client’s unhappiness at the club and would love to see him leave.
But finding a suitor while many teams around the world are reeling from the Covid pandemic might prove difficult.
