Man Utd ‘transfer surprise’ hinted at as Erik ten Hag plots three late signings
Football Digest: Analysing Man Utd's failed recruitment
Manchester United have been tipped to spring a transfer surprise in the final few days of the summer transfer window, with three new signings still possible at Old Trafford. The Red Devils are expected to recruit a short-term left-back and cover goalkeeper before the deadline, but there may be room for an 11th-hour midfield arrival.
Erik ten Hag has splashed £179million on three signings this summer, luring Andre Onana, Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund to M16.
But he is clearly still short in some areas amid a turbulent start to the season – particularly in midfield, worsened by a recent injury to Mount.
With Dean Henderson set to complete a £20m move to Crystal Palace imminently, United will soon confirm the £4m arrival of Fenerbahce goalkeeper Altay Bayindir.
And Ten Hag is also expected to recruit a new left-back after potentially losing Luke Shaw until November through a muscle injury suffered in training last week.
United are in talks over a season-long loan for Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella and hope to reach a compromise after an initial request for £7m.
Many believe Ten Hag’s cries for a midfielder will go unanswered, but transfer expert Dean Jones has offered hope that a late swoop could be on the cards.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I’m starting to hear that Manchester United have an eye on a couple of players that haven’t actually been mentioned in that area of the field.
“So maybe it’s that they’re going to spring a surprise in the next couple of days.
“I’m not saying it’s something to be especially excited about because a surprise could just be also seen as a money-saving exercise or Glazernomics as some United fans would look at it as.
“Sofyan Amrabat alternatives are definitely out there, so it’ll be interesting to see who United might have identified. But ultimately, it’s just been a really frustrating end to the window.”

Sofyan Amrabat has been consistently mooted as United’s first-choice option if they can raise funds through another sale after offloading Fred, with Donny van de Beek and Scott McTominay in the shop window.
The Red Devils have also been linked with Everton’s Amadou Onana and Bayern Munich’s Ryan Gravenberch.
But Ten Hag may have to settle for a low-cost option that hasn’t featured prominently in media coverage as United feel the effects of FFP limitations.
