Manchester United are looking to raise £30million from the sale of Scott McTominay this summer with Newcastle hot in pursuit of the Scotland international midfielder, reports have claimed. The Magpies are long-term admirers of the industrious 26-year-old, whose chances of playing regularly in the Premier League may now be better served elsewhere.

Having begun the season in Erik ten Hag’s first-choice starting XI, McTominay has now found himself on the fringes of United’s squad, some way down the pecking order.

United are expected to tell McTominay that he is free to pursue a new challenge at the end of the season as the club look to add more quality to their ranks.

According to The Mirror, United are targeting a £30m summer sale with Newcastle at the front of the queue.

It’s claimed the Magpies saw a January loan approach rebuffed for the tenacious midfielder as Ten Hag did not wish to weaken his squad.

But that could change in the summer when United are expected to go after the signing of another midfielder with Jude Bellingham, Moises Caicedo and Frenkie de Jong among the names on the agenda.

Newcastle are expected to continue reinvesting in the summer window when they will also reconsider a swoop for James Maddison.

The Leicester playmaker is at the top of their transfer shortlist but so far, the Foxes have shown no signs of cracking easily in their efforts to keep hold of the England international.

Maddison will enter the final year of his Leicester deal in the summer and should the Foxes fail to entice him into a new contract, they could be forced to sell up.

An offer of around £50m could be enough to twist Leicester’s arm as they are seemingly resigned to losing the player on a free transfer with Youri Tielemans also on course to exit the King Power Stadium in June.

Given United are still in the FA Cup and Europa League, McTominay could still receive minutes between now and the end of the season.

However, long-term, it’s believed the club are willing to let the Scotsman move on as he is one of many first-team stars that could help bring in some money through player sales.

McTominay is an injury doubt for this weekend’s FA Cup clash with Fulham, a match where he could potentially pick up some more playing time.

Ten Hag said on Friday upon return from Seville, where United beat Real Betis 1-0 in the Europa League: “We just returned. We have to see, to see the doc. I have an idea but I have to see the progress with some players.

“About the last game, that is why I didn’t bring him in, Scott McTominay, [as] he had some complaints. We have to see how that will progress in the coming hours and days.”

United will be without midfield lynchpin Casemiro for the visit of Fulham following his red card against Southampton last weekend.

The Brazilian is set to miss United’s next four domestic matches following his horror challenge on Carlos Alcaraz.
