Man Utd star Aaron Wan-Bissaka may quit England as Ten Hag left with new concern
Manchester United star Aaron Wan-Bissaka has reportedly been offered the chance to represent DR Congo at this winter’s Africa Cup of Nations. The full-back originally represented the African nation in one match for their Under-20 side back in 2015 before switching to England’s youth setup.
He went on to earn a call-up to England’s senior squad ahead of Euro 2020 qualifiers against Kosovo and Bulgaria, but was forced to withdraw from the squad due to injury. Wan-Bissaka has failed to make his way back into Gareth Southgate’s thinking with the likes of Kieran Trippier, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Reece James and Kyle Walker all fighting for the starting spot on the right side of defence.
According to The Athletic, Wan-Bissaka has now been approached by DR Congo to be part of their squad for the Africa Cup of Nations in the New Year. The news could be significant for United boss Erik ten Hag, who already has four players that may decide to play in the major tournament.
Andre Onana, Amad, Sofyan Amrabat and Hannibal have all represented their countries at international level and are eligible to be selected for the competition in the New Year.
Wan-Bissaka would potentially be the fifth player to depart Old Trafford for the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. The 25-year-old is of Congolese descent through his father and has reportedly been considering switching allegiances.
But DR Congo head coach Sebastien Desabre stated recently that the country would not push Wan-Bissaka if he didn’t truly want to represent the African nation. Desabre said in September: “He’s a nice player as you know but we won’t run after the players.

“We have a lot of players who worked very hard for us to qualify for Afcon. If Aaron or other players are at a good level and want to come there’s no problem.
“The team is open for all players [who have Congolese connection] but on one condition that they must want it with their hearts to come to the national team. When it’s the right moment for this guy (Wan-Bissaka), he can come.”
If Wan-Bissaka does opt to join DR Congo at the Africa Cup of Nations, that would leave Ten Hag needing to shift things around in defence. The former Crystal Palace defender has been Ten Hag’s first-choice at right-back this season when fully fit, although Diogo Dalot is capable of taking his place.
