Man Utd in ‘five-team transfer battle’ as Ten Hag eyes double Brazilian raid

Erik ten Hag previews Man Utd's clash with Brentford

Manchester United have reportedly added a second Brazilian starlet to their shortlist of transfer targets in Palmeiras midfielder Luis Guilherme, in addition to Flamengo’s Lorran as both could join as part of a double swoop. The Red Devils clearly have one eye on the future with their considerable interest in two 17-year-old prodigies coming out of South America.

Fabrizio Romano has claimed that a member of United’s scouting team is travelling Brazil to keep an eye on both players, as Guilherme is being monitored by the club ahead of a possible move alongside Lorran. However, they will likely face strong competition to land the Brazil under-20 international who has become a regular feature in the Palmerias team.

As many as four other teams have registered their interest in the teenager, including one from Germany, so United may have to act quickly in order to sign Guilherme. He may have been initially noticed after scoring a brace for Brazil under-17s against England, proving to be a winger with plenty of potential.

As someone who can operate on both flanks, Guilherme could offer a long-term solution to Erik ten Hag’s woes, especially on the right. Antony has only recently returned from a leave of absence after allegations of domestic abuse were made, while Jadon Sancho has been banished from the first-team facilities following his public spat with Ten Hag.

They may have to fork out a huge transfer fee though to land Guilherme, as Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo claimed that Palmeiras included a £52million release clause in his contract.

They tied the teenager down to a new deal until 2025 as a result of reported interest from Real Madrid, as Los Blancos were perhaps looking to replicate their Brazilian recruitment success that has seen Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo go on to become key players at the Bernabeu.

United could be forced to pay nearly £100m to sign both Guilherme and Lorran, as the Flamengo attacking midfielder also has a release clause inserted into his contract to the tune of £43m.

At a time when United have been hamstrung by Financial Fair Play considerations and the potential takeover of the club, whether they are prepared to make a significant outlay remains to be seen but at the very least the efforts already made are highlighting that there is one eye on the future.

With Marcus Rashford growing into a talismanic figure, United’s next generation could be one to fear if the likes of Guilherme and Lorran can join Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Hojlund, Facundo Pellistri, Amad Diallo and Hannibal Mejbri for years to come at Old Trafford.
