Man Utd icon Peter Schmeichel turns on Andre Onana with cutting rant
Erik ten Hag previews Arsenal v Man Utd clash
Manchester United hero Peter Schmeichel believes that his former side lost in a ‘terrible’ way against Arsenal, with the Dane adding that goalkeeper Andre Onana should have saved Declan Rice’s stoppage-time goal. Onana is yet to prove himself as a steadying presence with the Red Devils since completing his summer switch from Inter Milan.
Manager Erik ten Hag took the gutsy decision to make a change between the sticks after his first full season in charge. David de Gea was allowed to leave as a free agent, with Onana brought in for £47million.
After being lobbed from long-range against Lens in pre-season, the Cameroon international was also criticised for his poor attempt to deny Taiwo Awoniyi of Nottingham Forest last month. Schmeichel believes that Onana should take some of the blame for United’s 3-1 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday, too.
The game was finely poised at 1-1 heading into second-half stoppage time, at which point Rice struck powerfully into the back of the net, with Onana getting a touch on its way through.

Gabriel Jesus then added another to seal the three points for the Gunners. On Rice’s strike, Schmeichel said after the game: “I’ve got no words…I’m shocked!
“It’s a terrible way to lose a game. United defended so badly for the corner at the end, Declan Rice had so much time and the goalkeeper should save it.”

Arsenal may be stuck with their own Jadon Sancho unless Arteta takes action[COMMENT]
Ten Hag will be desperate for Onana’s stint at Old Trafford to work out after casting aside De Gea, who had racked up well over 500 appearances for the Red Devils. Onana recently decided to come out of international retirement, which could pose problems for United later in the season.
If Cameroon qualify for the African Cup of Nations and reach the latter stages of the tournament, the 27-year-old could miss up to four of United’s matches. Summer signing Altay Bayindir would then be expected to step in.
Based on Ten Hag’s recent comments, the United boss will feel comfortable putting his trust in the former Fenerbahce stopper, who set the club back just £4.3m shortly before the transfer deadline.
“We followed him, scouted him very intensely and we think he has the skills to fit in at Man United, to fit into English football,” said Ten Hag. “We are really glad that we signed him and we are confident that he will make a lot of progress in the coming period.”
