Man Utd icon Neville names Wayne Rooney as dream Rasmus Hojlund strike partner
Gary Neville would have loved to see Wayne Rooney partner Rasmus Hojlund up front for Manchester United. The Red Devils legend believes his old team-mate would have been the perfect foil for the Denmark international.
United signed Hojlund in the summer for a fee worth up to £72million. He had just one season in Serie A with Atalanta and that was enough for Erik ten Hag to make him his biggest signing in 2023.
The 20-year-old is still waiting for his first Premier League goal, though has three to his name in three Champions League matches. United crashed out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday and have lost five of their first 10 league matches of the season.
But Neville believes Hojlund is one shining light in Ten Hag’s squad. However, he reckons he needs to play up front with another forward and says he and Rooney would have bullied opposition teams if they played together.
Neville said on the Webby & O’Neill YouTube channel: “I love Hojlund. Hojlund is a player that fits the United profile of player.

“He’s young, he’s got plenty of growth, he’s strong. I think I’d hate to play against him.
“I’d have loved to see him up front with [Eric] Cantona, I’d love to see him up front with [Dwight] Yorke, I’d love to see him up front with [Andy] Cole, I’d love to see him up front with Wazza [Rooney].
“If he was up front with Wazza they’d beat everyone up. He’s having to be the man, not the assistant to the man, which he should be really and if he was up front with Harry Kane we’d be looking at someone rampaging through people this season.
“We’ve got some good players, don’t get me wrong. So it’s not all doom and gloom.”
Speaking last month, Ten Hag admitted he was pleased with Hojlund’s impact since arriving. He also said he can play in the same side as Anthony Martial, although hinted that wouldn’t be as a front two.

Ten Hag said of Hojlund: “He missed pre-season, the first four games, but I think from the moment he came in, he gave the team a lot.
“We’re building the routines and that split moment will give him more time and to make better decisions for more goals, but the goals against Galatasaray were two brilliant goals. As well, also the one in Munich.
“I think he’s a player who will always be in scoring positions in our team. I’m sure, I’m confident [he’ll score goals] and Marcus Rashford the same.
“They can play together because Anthony Martial is also available to play from the side.”
