Man Utd hero Neville shares Glazers’ reasoning behind takeover U-turn

Manchester United fans have a clear favourite for the takeover

Gary Neville believes the Glazers are “desperate” to sell Manchester United despite reports suggesting they have taken the club off the market. The Red Devils icon has blasted the Glazers family for treating the club like a “toy” throughout the takeover saga, with prospective bidders and even merchant bank Raine, who are overseeing the talks, kept out of the loop.

According to the Daily Mail, the Glazers intend to put Man Utd back on the market in 2025 when they believe they will receive closer to their £6billion valuation. Sheikh Jassim of Qatar and Ineos owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe emerged as the only serious bidders and made offers of around £5bn for the club.

Jassim hoped to secure 100 per cent of the club while Ratcliffe’s offer was for less. This would have allowed the Glazers to maintain a 20 per cent stake if accepted.

As a result, Jassim emerged as a favourite among fans but their worst fears have now been realised. A source said: “The Glazers are thick-skinned and won’t be influenced by any negative fan reactions.”

However, Neville remains confident they will have to sell as United are handcuffed by Financial Fair Play. “It’s just a game for them, they think it’s a toy!” said Neville on his Sky Sports podcast after Arsenal beat Man Utd 3-1 on Sunday. “Of course, they’re going to sell. They’re desperate for money.

“They can’t even compete on FFP anymore. Man Utd are talking like a midtable club when it comes to the transfer market. Man Utd turn over £500m, one of the highest revenue-generating clubs in the world.

“Chelsea, Arsenal can sign big players, Man Utd are scrambling around on FFP. I know they’ve had losses on Covid and that could be thrown as an excuse.

“Today was a fantastic game but it won’t change the fact that they’ve got owners of one of the biggest clubs in the world who are messing around with the football club and I’m not going to stop talking about it because it’s a massive problem.”

Man Utd find themselves in 11th place in the Premier League following a devastating defeat away to Arsenal. Last season, United struggled against top seven sides and the same appears to be the case this year having already been beaten by the Gunners’ neighbours Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in August.
