Man Utd fans think Lisandro Martinez faked injury ‘when team needed him most’

Manchester United fans are convinced Lisandro Martinez faked an injury against Arsenal after spotting the defender looking fit and healthy on international duty.

Martinez was subbed off for Harry Maguire during their defeat to the Gunners on Sunday after going down in considerable discomfort on 67 minutes with the score at 1-1.

United went on to concede two late goals with Maguire partnering 35-year-old Jonny Evans, who had come on for the injured Victor Lindelof, in a rather amateur-looking backline, and some supporters have accused Martinez of leaving his team-mates in the trenches.

In response to photo of the 25-year-old in high spirits during Argentina training this week, one fan wrote: "Couldn’t get off the pitch quickly enough on Sunday which contributed to us losing the game, yet here he is perfectly fine a couple of days later. Really poor this."

Another said: "Littlesandro Martinez faked an injury to get subbed off vs Arsenal. The whole hard man persona is an act and overcompensating."

A third added: "He left his team when they needed him most," while a fourth argued: "This is why you don't give players titles like the butcher, whilst one of our centre back injected pain killers for the entire year to stay fit for us, the 'butcher' comes off acting injured but still is fit enough to make the Argentina squad."

The defender, who followed Erik ten Hag to United from Ajax last summer, has looked somewhat out of sorts so far this season, though it's little surprise given the club's struggles with both form and fitness.

His usual centre back partner Raphael Varane has been sidelined since last month and the Red Devils have looked a little shaky at the back ever since, conceding two goals against Tottenham and two against Nottingham Forest on top of the three they shipped at the Emirates.
