Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag has one reason to be very excited for January window

Erik ten Hag has regularly stressed his desire for the correct characters in his dressing room since becoming Manchester United manager. That’s why, 18 months into his cultural rebuild at Old Trafford, he likely can’t wait to offload Jadon Sancho in the January transfer window.

Ten Hag will have learnt why Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick struggled to get a tune out of Sancho early into his tenure.

Still, he managed him expertly last season, allowing the 23-year-old months away from the spotlight to work on himself when United were short on attacking numbers.

It made Sancho’s public strop over being left out of the squad for United’s 3-1 defeat at Arsenal this season all the more confusing.

Ten Hag confirmed that he excluded him from the September 3 trip to the Emirates Stadium for poor training performances.

Sancho bit back on social media, effectively calling the United boss a liar and accusing him of making him a scapegoat for the club’s early-season struggles.

He hasn’t been seen among Ten Hag’s first team since. Since the start of September, Sancho has been exiled. And if reports are to be believed, with good reason.

Of course, there are two sides to every story. Some reports claim a selection of Sancho’s teammates disagreed with the public manner of Ten Hag’s criticism.

But most suggest the England international’s performances at Carrington haven’t been up to scratch for some time and that his peers have urged him to apologise to Ten Hag and fight for his United future.

Sancho’s attitude issues reportedly stretch back to his days in Manchester City’s academy and during his exciting breakthrough at Borussia Dortmund.

Unfortunately, United’s recruitment team don’t appear to know the meaning of a background check.

Sancho was bought as a right winger, but his preference to play on the left, Marcus Rashford’s favourite position, has also caused trouble.

He has infuriated United fans further during his absence from senior duty. Instead of swallowing his pride and showing why Ten Hag was wrong to banish him, the opposite appears to be the path he’s gone down.

Sancho was spotted playing the video game EA FC 24 in the early hours on the morning of United’s Champions League opener against Bayern Munich in Germany.

Most recently, Sancho rubbed supporters the wrong way by posing for a photo at 21 Savage’s afterparty in London on Thursday, the day after United faced Galatasaray in Istanbul.

The £73million flop seems to believe he is in the right over his spat with Ten Hag. And he’s well within his rights to.

Alejandro Garnacho has emerged on the senior scene and shown the professionalism and potential required to make it at the highest level.

The 19-year-old leapfrogged Sancho in Ten Hag’s attacking pecking order before his banishment and earned a new long-term contract at Old Trafford as a result.

Ten Hag will be eager to use the winter transfer window to continue morphing his squad to his liking, even with limited financial power. Cutting ties with Sancho is undoubtedly on the agenda.
