Man Utd and Newcastle offered Toni Kroos for free as Real Madrid star seeks move

Manchester United and Newcastle are among the clubs to have been offered the chance to sign Toni Kronos on a free transfer, according to reports. The Real Madrid legend is out of contract at the Bernabeu at the end of the season and is no longer a regular.

The 33-year-old has made 13 appearances, scoring once and providing three assists, but six of those have come from the bench. He has amassed just 628 minutes so far – the equivalent of seven-and-a-half full matches despite Real Madrid playing 14 games (1,260 mins) – and was taken off on the hour mark at 1-0 down to Barcelona in Saturday’s El Clasico.

As such, the retired 106-cap Germany international is looking for a new adventure from next summer. Per the Daily Star, Kroos has been offered to multiple big Premier League clubs. He can discuss a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs as of January.

And it is claimed United, Manchester City, Newcastle and Chelsea are among those who have been made aware of the midfielder’s upcoming availability. Veteran Kroos is keen to end his career in style and has never played in the Premier League.

United were keen to bring him under David Moyes in 2014 and Kroos has admitted he was sold on a move to Old Trafford – until the Scot was sacked in April. Kroos instead went on to leave Bayern Munich for Real Madrid where he has enjoyed an incredibly successful 10 years.

The 2014 World Cup winner explained: “The contract had basically been done but then Moyes was fired and Louis van Gaal came in, which complicated matters. Louis wanted time to build his own project. I didn’t hear anything from United for a while and started having doubts. Then the World Cup started and Carlo Ancelotti called. And that was it.”

United now have the chance to sign the player for nothing 10 years on but it is unclear whether that would appeal. They are lacking mobility in midfield as it is and already have two ageing former Real Madrid players in Raphael Varane and Casemiro who have endured struggles with fitness and a loss of form this season.

There is no doubting Kroos’ class though and Premier League clubs might even stand a chance of doing a cut-price deal in the January transfer window. Newcastle could be an interesting opportunity with Sandro Tonali having just been banned for 10 months for betting on football.

West Ham, managed by ex-United boss Moyes, are also claimed to keeping developments on Kroos’ future. Certainly it appears he will not be headed to the Saudi Pro League after criticising players who have gone out to the Middle East.

He said: “It has been said that the football there is ambitious, but it all revolves around money. In the end, it is a decision for money and against football. Everyone has to make a decision for themselves, like Cristiano Ronaldo, who decided to do it towards the end of his career.

“But it becomes very difficult when players, who are in the middle of their career and have the quality to play for the best clubs in Europe, decide to make those changes. The lack of human rights is what would prevent me from leaving.”

Five-time Champions League winner Kroos has racked up 429 appearances in his decade at Real Madrid, with 28 goals and 92 assists to his name. He has won six league titles across spells with Bayern and the La Liga giants as well as four domestic cups, six Club World Cups and four UEFA Super Cups.
