Man United's most winning XI since Erik ten Hag took over

Harry Maguire is right! Under-fire defender has the best record at Manchester United under Erik ten Hag… and the rest of the team with the best win rate doesn’t look great for the Dutchman either

  • Harry Maguire bragged about his ‘ridiculously high’ win rate at Man United
  • No player with five or more games has a higher rate than Magire under Ten Hag
  • Listen to the latest episode of Mail Sport’s podcast ‘It’s All Kicking Off!’

Harry Maguire came out fighting by insisting that his win rate at Manchester United is ‘ridiculously high’ and won’t ‘sit and play once a month’.

The England international refused a summer move to West Ham to stay at the Red Devils despite being stripped of the captain’s armband, though he still maintains a bit-part role under manager Erik ten Hag.

Opta analysis though shows that out of any player with five or more appearances since the Dutchman took over, Maguire has a better winning percentage than any other United player.

In 35 appearances since the start of last season, United have prevailed on 27 occasions, with Maguire’s win percentage at 77 per cent. In the 18 matches he has started, he has a win percentage of 78 per cent – only less than two players for all those who have made ten or more starts.

With that in mind, Mail Sport takes a look at Manchester United’s most winning team under Ten Hag.

GOALKEEPER

David de Gea

58 appearances, 37 wins, 64 per cent

Ten Hag decided to replace the veteran Spaniard with Andre Onana this past summer, in a decision, which so far, has failed to pay off.

De Gea, who first joined United in 2011, made 545 appearances for the club – 58 of which came under Ten Hag.

In that time he won 37 games at a win percentage of 64 – considerably higher than Onana after the Cameroonian shot-stopper’s first 11 games.

Onana, is one of only two players to have made five or more appearances for United and to have lost more games than he has won. The other being Rasmus Hojlund (38 win percentage) – showing just how bad it has been for United so far this season.

With five wins and six defeats, Onana has a win percentage of just 45, and given the amount of mistakes he has already made in his United career, he has a lot to do to reach De Gea’s level.

David de Gea won 64 per cent of his appearances under Erik ten Hag – despite failing to convince the Dutchman over his future at Old Trafford before his summer exit

Andre Onana has lost six out of his 11 games, and has a lot to do to repay Ten Hag’s faith in him

DEFENDERS

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

39 games, 25 wins, 64 per cent

The 25-year-old right-back is one of several United players who have reignited their careers at Old Trafford under Ten Hag.

His form vastly improved under the Dutchman, after struggling under previous bosses Ralf Rangnick and the end of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reign in charge.

Wan-Bissaka has played 39 games, winning 64 per cent of matches with 25 wins, six draws and eight losses.

It should be noted though that Diogo Dalot has started more games (47) than Wan-Bissaka (32) and has a win percentage of 60 when he has made the starting XI, compared to the uncapped English star at 59.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has a win percentage of 64, though main competition for the right-back slot, Diogo Dalot, has a higher winning percentage when it comes to starts under Ten Hag

Harry Maguire

35 games, 27 wins, 77 per cent

Maguire has the best win percentage (77) when it comes to those who have made five or more appearances, but less than two other players when it comes to starts.

He still has an impressive win percentage of 78 across his 18 starts, though both Tyrell Malacia and Alejandro Garnacho are ahead of him.

Malacia’s winning percentage of 83 from his 29 starts is particularly impressive, while Garnacho has won 79 per cent of his 14 starts.

Maguire’s lack of game-time is a big factor to his high win percentage and his comments are either a message to Ten Hag to give him more starts, or to those who might aspire to buy him in future transfer windows.

Maguire could look to leave Manchester United if Ten Hag doesn’t give him more game-time

Lisandro Martinez

51 games, 33 wins, 65 per cent

Maguire would be partnered by the man nicknamed ‘The Butcher’ if Ten Hag was to play his most winning XI – ahead of the likes of Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof.

Martinez has won 65 per cent of the 51 games that he has played in since his £56m move from Ajax in the summer of 2022.

That is higher than former Real Madrid star Raphael Varane (61 per cent) and Victor Lindelof (62 per cent).

Interestingly, it is Lindelof who has a better win percentage than Martinez or Varane when it comes to starts.

Lindelof has won 62 per cent of 34 games, while Martinez has 61 per cent of his 44 starts and Varane has won 59 per cent of 37 games.

Lisandro Martinez has a greater win percentage than Raphael Varane or Victor Lindelof

Tyrell Malacia

39 games, 27 wins, 69 per cent

Dutch left-back Tyrell Malacia might be the most underrated player in United’s squad – especially if you were to go off his stats whenever he has played.

As previously mentioned, no player has a higher winning percentage under Ten Hag out of any player who has made ten starts or more.

He is also only behind Maguire and one other player (mentioned later) with his 69 per cent win rate out of 39 games.

The 24-year’s old win rate has been left unaffected by United’s poor start to the season, given that he has been out with a knee injury.

Luke Shaw has made more appearances (49) than Malacia, winning 59 per cent of the games he has taken part in.

Tyrell Malacia has an impressive win rate but has not played this season due to a knee injury

MIDFIELDERS

Fred

56 games, 37 wins, 66 per cent

The Brazilian made 56 appearances under Ten Hag last season, 23 of which were starts, before he joined Turkish side Fenerbahce in the summer.

He only made 12 Premier League starts in 38 games, as he was regularly brought on in the final 15 minutes of the game.

This aside, he still won 66 per cent of the games that he appeared in, and 61 per cent out of the 23 games that he started.

As other midfield players arrived at the club under Ten Hag, his appearances always looked likely to drop, and he was sold for £13m after five years at Old Trafford.

Fred makes United’s most winning XI under Ten Hag though he struggled for regular starts

Donny van de Beek

12 games, 8 wins, 67 per cent

The Dutchman makes the list, but the fact that he would not be eligible for a United XI with ten or more starts under Ten Hag probably shows why that is the case.

Van de Beek, who starred for Ten Hag’s successful Ajax side before leaving for Man United, has only made 12 appearances under the Dutch manager at Old Trafford with eight victories and four losses at a win rate of 67 per cent.

Therefore, he gets in the side ahead of Casemiro, despite the Brazilian making 50 more appearances under Ten Hag since the start of last season.

Donny van de Beek makes the most winning team though he has only made 12 appearances

Scott McTominay

45 games, 33 wins, 73 per cent

The hero of United’s recent comeback victory over Brentford has the highest second win percentage of all those to make five or more appearances under Ten Hag.

He has won 73 per cent of the 45 games he has taken part in and 72 per cent of the 18 games he has started.

Much like Fred, he has dropped out of the regular starting XI since Ten Hag took over, making just ten Premier League starts last campaign after making 28 in the 2021-22 season.

He has also struggled for starts this season after a summer where he was linked to West Ham.

His stoppage time brace against Brentford though might give Ten Hag something to think about this season.

Players to miss out are Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Bruno Fernandes, newest signing Sofyan Amrabat who has five appearances and Mason Mount with six.

FORWARDS

Antony

50 games, 32 wins, 64 per cent

The Brazilian has been one of Ten Hag’s most consistent starters since joining from Ajax for £86m.

Antony has won 64 per cent of the 50 matches that he has appeared in under Ten Hag at Old Trafford.

He gets in over Jadon Sancho who has won 59 per cent of 44 appearances, though is still unavailable after he was banished from the squad following his public falling-out with Erik ten Hag.

Antony missed five games in total after United granted him leave, of which the Red Devils lost three to Bayern Munich, Brighton and Crystal Palace.

Antony has made Man United’s most winning XI under Ten Hag ahead of Jadon Sancho

Sancho’s win percentage of 59 is unlikely to improve any time soon due to his fall-out with Ten Hag

Cristiano Ronaldo

16 games, 11 wins, 69 per cent

The Portuguese superstar makes the list despite leaving Man United just months into Ten Hag’s reign last November.

Ronaldo was frustrated after being dropped out of the starting XI under the Dutchman, who he made just 16 appearances with ten starts for.

However, the Al Nassr star makes the list ahead of some other big names after United won 69 per cent of the games that he appeared in for Ten Hag.

This compares to Marcus Rashford who misses out with a 62 per cent win rate out of 66 appearances and Anthony Martial (61 per cent win rate out of 38 showings).

Martial interestingly has the fourth highest win rate when it comes to starts under Ten Hag.

The Frenchman has won 15 out of 20 starts at a 75 per cent rate, compared to Ronaldo’s 60 per cent out of 10 games and Rashford’s 59 per cent from 56 starts.

Ronaldo makes the most winning team under Ten Hag despite his frustrations under the Dutchman before joining Al-Nassr

Anthony Elanga

26 games, 18 wins, 69 per cent

Another surprising name in the team is Elanga, who left United this past summer to Nottingham Forest for £15m.

The 21-year-old only played 702 minutes across the entire 2022-23 season but actually made 26 appearances, albeit with only seven starts.

But still he qualifies for this team and has the fourth highest win rate out of all players to make five or more appearances under Ten Hag with 69 per cent – tied with Ronaldo.
