A medical emergency caused Manchester United’s Champions League match against FC Copenhagen to be paused on Wednesday night.

The game was brought to a halt after 18 minutes when United made an early substitution as Raphael Varane replaced the injured Jonny Evans and then it was announced that a supporter had been taken ill.

The players were left standing and waiting anxiously on the pitch, with some going to speak to manager Erik ten Hag while the supporter was assessed by medics.

They created a shield around the supporter so they could maintain some privacy while being treated.

Finally, after several minutes, the referee was given the signal that play could be resumed with the fan in safe hands, and he blew his whistle to get the action back underway.

The stadium announcer confirmed later in the first half that the supporter was ‘awake and well’ after the health scare.

The incident happened after United had taken an early lead after Scott McTominay set Rasmus Hojlund up for a simple tap-in.

It was eventful start to the game at the Parken Stadium, with play also having to be briefly stopped prior to the medical emergency after a fan ran onto the pitch carrying a Palestine flag.

The gesture came amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, but the supporter was swiftly detained by stewards.

Hojlund doubled his and United’s tally just before the half hour mark with another simple finish after Alejandro Garnacho’s shot was parried into his path.

The visitors appeared to be in complete control, but their task was made more difficult when Marcus Rashford was sent off shortly before half time following a VAR check for a mistimed tackle by the United forward.

Copenhagen then pulled a goal back in the final seconds of normal time through Mohamed Elyounoussi.

After a number of breaks in play, including for the medical emergency, 13 minutes of stoppage time were added on at the end of the first half.

The hosts levelled in the ninth minute of that stoppage time with a Diogo Goncalves penalty after Harry Maguire was penalised for handball.
