Manchester United will help Mason Greenwood try to rebuild his career in Spain by paying for a luxury villa and a translator.

The 21-year-old joined LaLiga side Getafe on a season-long loan on Friday after United said the striker would leave by mutual agreement following a six-month internal investigation.

It came after charges against the player, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped in February.

United chief John Murtough had taken over discussions over the loan deal after a failure to agree a deal on the player’s wages had threatened to derail the move.

And the Red Devils agreed a package to facilitate his deadline day move to the Madrid-based club including an £8,000-a-month, six- bedroom city villa close to his new club’s training ground and access to a private translator, according to the Sun.

Greenwood will remain a United player during his loan stint at Getafe.

Getafe announced their loan signing of Mason Greenwood with a video of fans celebrating the former Man United forward’s arrival.

Supporters had gathered at the club’s Coliseum Alfonso Perez stadium waiting for an announcement, and begun jumping and chanting when the news did eventually arrive.

The Spanish club will not be paying a fee for the English forward, but will cover a small contribution for his wages for the duration of the loan.

Greenwood hasn’t played competitive football since December 2021, after he was arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of a number of offences including attempted rape.

The 21-year-old was subsequently suspended by the club, however, in February the Crown Prosecution Service subsequently dropped the charges after key witnesses withdrew and new material came to light.

United then concluded their own investigation and judged Greenwood did not commit the offences which he was charged with but decided that his future no longer remained at Old Trafford.

Shortly after signing Greenwood, Getafe posted the video of jubilant fans on social media with the caption ‘The Coliseum a few minutes ago.’

They had faced competition for the forward, with the likes of Olympiacos, Red Star Belgrade and Lazio also interested.

Lazio had held extensive talks over signing Greenwood on the final day of the summer transfer window but ran out of time in order to complete a deal with United.

The Italian side’s president, Claudio Lotito, claims Greenwood was keen to join the Serie A club but United did not sign the paperwork in time.

‘I tried until the last minute,’ Lotito told La Lazio Siamo Noi shortly after the Italian transfer window closed on Friday evening.
