Maddison receives one of strangest yellow cards ever in dramatic Tottenham win
Tottenham midfielder James Maddison received one of the strangest yellow cards during his team’s dramatic late win over Sheffield United on Saturday. The England star was booked for dissent during the Premier League match in north London.
Maddison has had a superb start to life at Tottenham since leaving Leicester in the summer. The £40million Spurs paid looks to be one of the best pieces of business by a Premier League club in the recent window.
He had two goals and two assists in four appearances heading into the visit of Sheffield United. But it didn’t prove to be an easy afternoon for Ange Postecoglou, just a day after he was named manager of the month.
United goalkeeper Wes Foderingham was in inspired form to keep the hosts at bay in the first half. Spurs continued to be frustrated in the second period before Maddison was strangely booked in the 68th minute.

Maddison was not happy at a decision from referee Peter Bankes. He put his hands on his head and slumped to the floor to express his disbelief.
But Bankes did not like how Maddison reacted and he brandished the yellow card. Officials have been instructed to clamp down on dissent from players this season.
However, this seemed to be taking that to the extreme. Maddison and Spurs were only frustrated further six minutes later when Gustavo Hamer opened the scoring for the visitors against the run of play.
Tottenham continued to push for a deserved goal but it didn’t come in normal time. Twelve minutes were added on at the end of the match and that proved to be extremely fruitful for Postecoglou’s side.

Substitute Richarlison grabbed the equaliser with a header in the 98th minute. There was still plenty of time for Spurs to find a winner and they did just that.
Dejan Kulusevski fired home in the 101st minute to clinch another three points. The visitors lost Oli McBurnie to a red card late on as Spurs moved up to second in the table.
Only Manchester City have a better record than Spurs after five matches this season. Pep Guardiola’s team maintained their 100 per cent start with a 3-1 win away to West Ham.
Tottenham are not in any European competition this season so now have eight days to prepare for their next match. They travel to north London rivals Arsenal in the first derby of the campaign.
