Luis Diaz’s dad brings tear to the eye with celebrations in Liverpool away end
Four players who may look to leave Liverpool in January
Luis Diaz’s father was spotted among the Liverpool supporters celebrating Trent Alexander-Arnold’s goal on Saturday afternoon. The right-back scored a late equaliser against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, sending the away fans into a frenzy.
Luis Manuel Diaz was kidnapped in Colombia for 12 days earlier this month, being held at gunpoint along with his wife. Along with his wife, Cilenis Marulanda, the 58-year-old was held at gunpoint and taken away by a mob, later revealed to be the National Liberation Army.
After numerous public pleas, Manuel Diaz was released and heart-warming images of him reuniting with Luis Diaz have spread across social media. The father has spent plenty of time in England since his release, and footage has shown that he sat in the away end for his son’s match against City over the weekend.
Erling Haaland opened the scoring for City in the 27th minute, with Pep Guardiola’s side capitalising on a mistake by Alisson to play the ball through to their No 9, who obliged with a powerful strike into the far corner.

Liverpool then hit back with just nine minutes left on the clock through Alexander-Arnold, who collected the ball from Mohamed Salah on the edge of the box before taking one touch and then firing a fierce shot across Ederson and into the back of the net.
The equaliser from the right-back was wildly celebrated by the Liverpool supporters, and Manuel Diaz was filmed by Sky Sports in the heart of the action. Donning a black jacket and beanie, the Colombian was seen lifting his arm above his head and cheering on the team.
Both Liverpool and City pushed for a winner but ultimately they were forced to settle for a point in an enthralling match. Despite entering the fray in the 54th minute for the injured Diogo Jota, Diaz struggled to make his mark on the match, with the ex-Porto star having just 11 touches and not registering a shot.
Regardless, having his father sat in the away end will have been a touching moment for the winger and highlighted that there is more to life than simply his footballing career. Manuel Diaz is yet to be given an explanation as to why he was kidnapped by the group, revealing to the Colombian media recently that he was consistently told by his abductors that they would not put him in harm’s way whilst in their company.
