Liverpool are poised to reignite their interest in Chelsea star Mateo Kovacic as Jurgen Klopp looks to put the disappointment of a dismal campaign behind him. Klopp is said to be a big admirer of the Blues midfielder and once compared him to a “Formula One car.”
Liverpool were dumped out of the Champions League by Real Madrid on Wednesday night after exiting the FA Cup and Carabao Cup at the fourth round stages.
The Merseyside giants were sixth in the Premier League table at the start of the weekend after winning just 12 of their 26 matches this campaign and face a huge battle just to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
With a whole host of his star players not performing this season, Klopp will be desperate to bring in new faces once the campaign comes to an end. And, according to 90min, Kovacic is a player the Reds will target because he’s appreciated by the Anfield club.

Chelsea could be willing to let the player quit Stamford Bridge for a bargain fee as they have brought in a plethora of new players since Todd Boehly took over the club at the end of last May and may decide to slash their wage budget.
Klopp spoke about a number of Chelsea players in September 2018 ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League encounter with Chelsea in west London. “How do we defend him?” Klopp said after being asked about Jorginho. “We have [Eden] Hazard and him. And Willian. And Kovacic running like a Formula One car. And [N’Golo] Kante.”

Liverpool have a rare weekend off as they have been knocked out of the FA Cup and their would-be Premier League opponents Fulham are scheduled to face Manchester United in the quarter-finals of the competition.
Klopp will therefore be taking the opportunity to ensure his players are well prepared for their next encounter against Manchester City at the start of next month. “Our job is to squeeze absolutely everything out of this season what is possible,” the ex-Borussia Dortmund manager said in midweek as he addressed his club’s desire to break into the top four.
“It’s a strange one. Our recent two games, obviously a sensational performance against Manchester United, which is a real good football team. And then a really bad performance against Bournemouth, which is a good football team as well, but we should not lose this kind of game. It put us then under more pressure. It is clear, we want to be top four, but if we can do that, we will decide on the pitch [and] not here in the press conference.”
