Liverpool, Man Utd, Chelsea and Man City’s possible Champions League opponents

Liverpool's potential Champions League draw has become clearer following an upset in the qualifying stages.

A surprise defeat for Benfica to PAOK Salonika on Tuesday has had implications for Jurgen Klopp's side as well as for their Premier League rivals Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea.

Benfica's defeat means they have failed to reach the Champions League group stages for the first time since 2010.

Had they qualified, the Portuguese side would have been placed in Pot 2 for the group stage draw.

But their elimination means Ajax are promoted to Pot 2, with Dinamo Zageb provisionally moving up to Pot 3, pending their qualification.

As Premier League champions, Liverpool are automatically placed into Pot 1.

Also in Pot 1 are reigning Champions League winners Bayern Munich, Europa League champions Sevilla plus Real Madrid, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, Zenit St Petersburg and Porto – meaning Klopp's side will avoid all those teams.

City, United and Chelsea are all in Pot 2, meaning each of them will be drawn with one of the above teams.

They will all avoid Liverpool, as teams from the same country cannot be drawn together.

Six places in the group stages are to still be confirmed, with the third qualifying round concluding this week before a two-legged final play-off later this month.

Of the clubs already qualified, a dream draw for 2019 Champions League winners Liverpool could be Ajax, Lazio and Rennes.

On the other hand, they could be landed with Inter Milan, Marseille and Atletico Madrid – who eliminated the Reds from the knockout rounds this season.

The Champions League group-stage draw takes place on Nyon, Switzerland on October 1.
