Liverpool have been linked with a move for Jeremy Doku for some time, and they may finally have the chance to sign him in January after his father opened the door for a potential transfer.

Liverpool have been linked with a move for Belgian youngster Jeremy Doku, and they have been handed a major boost following comments made by the star’s father.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were linked with a move for Doku during the summer after the Belgian impressed while representing his country during the European Championships, and it wasn’t the first time a move to Anfield presented itself.

Doku revealed that Liverpool pushed to sign him while at Anderlecht during the 2017/18 season, but decided against the move as he didn’t feel ready to join such a big club.

However, Doku may make the move after all, as his father has given Liverpool the green light.

Liverpool haven’t been the only side to express interest in Doku, as Barcelona have also been keeping tabs on the 19-year-old who currently plays for French side Rennes.

Barcelona may have to look elsewhere though as Doku’s father has put any potential move to the Catalan side in doubt following recent comments, which could open the door for Liverpool to try their luck once more.

Doku’s father spoke to Het Laatste Nieuws, and said: “We have not heard anything from Barcelona yet.

“That doesn’t seem right to me. I don’t think Barcelona are in a position to spend big transfer fees right now.

“There are many other clubs who want Jeremy, although I am not allowed to say anything about that.

“He can say, ‘wait and see’. I don’t think he wants to change yet, but in football, everything can change quickly. It depends which team is interested.”

Liverpool are likely to be in the hunt for a new forward in the upcoming January transfer window as they prepare to lose both Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah temporarily at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Doku has been mentioned as one of the main targets on Jurgen Klopp’s list, as the 19-year-old has been on his radar for some time, and Liverpool will be left extremely light in attack come January.

Klopp is already looking to the future as he faces the task of replacing his iconic front three almost in one go, with Salah, Mane and Roberto Firmino all so similar in age, and the trio all currently see their deals expire in 2023.

Diogo Jota was the first major new signing that will lead the new era when Liverpool’s trio eventually move on, so Doku would not only provide cover, but also become the second addition to a potential new line.

As well as signing new stars, Liverpool have a huge task on their hands as they look to secure new deals for Salah, Mane and Firmino, with the Egyptian especially difficult to tie down due to being the best in the world right now.

Doku would undoubtedly be a hit for the future, but the short-term focus on their current stars may also prove valuable, and solve plenty of problems down the line.
