Liverpool get double fitness blow ahead of huge Premier League clash vs Man Utd

Liverpool could be missing a couple of options in defence and midfield against Manchester United after two players weren't spotted at the latest team training session.

Jurgen Klopp put his players through their paces at the Reds' AXA Training Centre on Wednesday, with all eyes on Sunday's Anfield summit meeting against United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side overtook their rivals at the top of the Premier League with a win at Burnley on Tuesday, as Klopp's men paid the price for their indifferent recent league form which has brought just two points from the last nine available.

Much of the focus during the Reds' season has been on their lack of numbers in defence following injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, and that was brought into stark focus when midfielders Jordan Henderson and Fabinho played at the back together in last week's loss at Southampton.

The reason they both had to be relied upon was due to the latest injury suffered by Joel Matip, with the centre-back seemingly losing his fight to be fit in time for the visit of United.

Matip was nowhere to be seen at Wednesday's session, and with Klopp insisting on his players taking part in at least two team training sessions before they are considered for selection, the next two days will be vital in deciding over whether or not he plays.

Another absentee was midfielder Naby Keita, who hasn't played since completing the full 90 minutes in the 7-0 win at Crystal Palace before Christmas.

The former RB Leipzig man was said to be taking part in an individual indoor session, and isn't quite ready to return to team training.

When fit the Guinean provides another option in midfield, something that is growing increasingly important for Liverpool given that other midfielders are needed further back.
