Andy Robertson is facing a battle to play again this calendar year after it was decided he needs surgery on the shoulder he dislocated in Scotland’s loss to Spain over the international break.
The Liverpool left-back departed the field in clear discomfort in the match last Thursday and travelled back to Merseyside for several days of medical tests. After receiving multiple opinions on the best course of action, the club and player decided surgery was the sensible outcome.
Robertson is likely to have the surgery next week and has been quoted a timescale of around 10 weeks of recovery depending on how rehabilitation goes. That would keep him out until the Christmas period, but these injuries can often take longer to recover from.

Kostas Tsimikas is in line to start the Merseyside Derby on Saturday against Everton at Anfield
It means Greek full back Kostas Tsimikas is in line to make his first Premier League start of the season in the Merseyside Derby on Saturday against Everton at Anfield. Tsimikas started both of Greece’s games in the international break, including a win over Ireland in Dublin.
‘There was a little chance we could try without [surgery] but a lot of experts says surgery would be the best in the long term,’ said Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.
‘In my experience you can train pretty quickly again [with this injury] but not football specific.’
Robertson has been an ever-present in the league this season and has created more chances for team-mates than any Liverpool player. The Scotsman signed from Hull City in 2017 and has been reliable with his fitness, playing 275 times in all competitions.
