‘For him not to win is an absolute joke’: Liverpool fans fume at Virgil van Dijk missing out on 2019 Ballon d’Or crown as Barcelona star Lionel Messi beats Liverpool defender to prize

Liverpool fans are furious that Virgil van Dijk was pipped to the Ballon d’Or award by Lionel Messi.

The Argentine, who attended with his wife Antonella Roccuzzo and his two sons Thiago and Mateo, went into the evening in Paris level with Ronaldo on five Ballon d’Or awards each but now stands alone with six.

Van Dijk came second after a year which included winning the Champions League with the Reds in 2019 and Liverpool knocking out Messi’s Barcelona in the process.

One fan said: ‘Van Dijk had the best individual 2019 and no rigged trophy needs to tell me that.’   

Another Liverpool fan said: ‘Virgil van Dijk set the standard for defense in world football. 

‘The entirety of Europe was desperately tracking to see if a player could just get past him. 

‘Monumental player with unparalleled abilities who won the biggest prize in Europe. For him not to win is an absolute joke.’

One fan said: ‘If Virgil Van Dijk didn’t win the Ballon D’or this year, then a defender never will. 

Someone neutral said: ‘If Virgil van Dijk played for Barcelona, he would’ve won the 2019 Ballon d’Or.’ 

It was the first time since 2015 that Messi lifted the award with Ronaldo (twice) and his then Real Madrid team-mate Luka Modric winning the following three years.
