Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp drops early Thiago Alcantara team news hint for Southampton

Liverpool: Klopp opens up on transfer plans for January

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has admitted there is “a chance” that Thiago Alcantara could start in the Reds’ upcoming game against Southampton. The Spain international returned to action in Liverpool’s 0-0 draw with Newcastle after just over two months out with a knee injury.

Thiago impressed in his brief cameo and Klopp has revealed that he could be ready for just his second Premier League start against the Saints.

When asked if it was likely that he would start, Klopp said: “Unfortunately, I haven’t known him for long – only a few months now.

“But, I would like to answer the question, so the fact he could play 20 minutes [against Newcastle] was pretty special.

“He only had two sessions with the team, that’s it.

“One of the sessions he was ‘a joker’ – so I’m not sure you can count that really.

“This game gave us an opportunity to introduce him because it was mainly about creating and that’s obviously his best skill.

“We will see but there’s a chance. He played 20 so there’s a chance, we will see if he has no muscle soreness or anything like that.

“He enjoyed the game, the few minutes.

“I like speaking about Thiago but the boys who have done the job so far have done exceptionally well, it’s not like we can’t survive if he doesn’t start the next game.

“But it’s very good that he’s now fit and is in contention – I like that a lot.”

Speaking about Thiago’s brief cameo against Newcastle, Klopp labelled his display “brilliant”.

“We signed Thiago because we thought he was a good player,” Klopp said after the game.

“You can imagine we would like to have him in the team, that is clear. What the other boys did in the time he was not available is absolutely incredible.

“It’s good. Thiago is a super player. For the 20 minutes, 12 were brilliant and then he felt the intensity.

“That’s normal as he trained exactly twice with the team. He still has some physical work to do, still some rhythm to get.”
