Lionel Messi’s family stance on PSG future and potential Barcelona return

Lionel Messi is eager to stay at Paris Saint-Germain despite reports in the past week suggesting the Argentine was eyeing a return to Barcelona.

Barca confirmed the signing of legendary former right-back Dani Alves last week, sparking speculation that Messi could also be tempted to re-join the Catalans under new manager and former teammate Xavi.

Club president Joan Laporta added additional fuel to the rumours by stating that he would not “rule out” Messi nor midfielder Andres Iniesta’s return.

But the 34-year-old talisman has since played down talk of re-signing for the Blaugrana by claiming he is “focused” on his PSG career.

Speaking after Argentina secured their spot at the 2022 World Cup last week, Messi said: “Now it’s time to change the chip because I still want to help achieve all the objectives we have set ourselves at PSG and I want to focus on that and work hard to make it happen.”

That comes despite suggestions of unrest in the PSG dressing room, with Messi even having had a visible disagreement with manager Mauricio Pochettino after being subbed off in October.

Messi had a hugely underwhelming start to life in Paris after suffering with an injury and failing to get off the mark in Ligue 1 for the first three months of the campaign.

He finally scored his first league goal of the season on Saturday in a victory over Nantes, which may indicate that he is finally finding his feet in France.

Spanish outlet Diario AS are among those that have claimed Messi will remain at PSG beyond this season despite the Barcelona president's optimism.

They stated the Argentine’s family are “completely settled” with life in Paris, with his children having found a school.

AS also added that despite early concerns, Messi “is happy and has no intention of leaving” despite the allure of Xavi’s project at Barcelona.

He will next face another former Barcelona legend and manager in Pep Guardiola as PSG visit Manchester City in the Champions League on Wednesday.
