Kai Rooney’s Instagram follows give huge hint at dad Wayne’s new managerial role

Kai Rooney has dropped a major hint about where his dad’s next job could be following his departure from DC United.

The England legend has been in charge of the MLS side for 15 months and while they ended their season with a 2-0 victory over New York City, they cannot reach the play-offs. The Washington side sit ninth in the 15-team league.

After the match, Rooney confirmed his departure, which will inevitably trigger speculation about a return to English management, having impressed during his time at crisis-hit Derby. The former Manchester United and Everton striker insisted he had nothing lined up at the moment.

However, Rooney has been linked with the manager’s role at Birmingham City, where NFL icon Tom Brady is a minority owner. Last month, current manager John Eustace was linked with Rangers, who recently sacked Michael Beale.

If Eustace were to leave St Andrew’s, Rooney would reportedly be a top target for the Blues’ new American owners. And Kai has added fuel to the speculation by following a host of Birmingham players on Instagram, plus the club’s Community Trust and women’s team.

In his farewell press conference with DC, Rooney revealed he had been offered a job in England only last month. He said: “I got offered a job four weeks ago very close to my home in England. I turned that down because I wanted to push and do everything I can to make the play-offs here.

“I wanted to do everything right to try and make the play-offs. Now we can’t, it’s the right time for the players to know, then yourselves [the media]. I wish everyone here success in the future. I’m grateful.”

Birmingham fans would be reluctant to see a change of boss though, given the team are in the play-off places after years of struggle on and off the pitch.
