Nottingham Forest have today confirmed the departure of Jonjo Shelvey, who will join Turkish Super Lig club Rizespor on a season-long loan deal.
Reports suggested on Wednesday that the the former Newcastle and Liverpool central midfield player was closing in on a move to join the Turkish outfit.
But today, Forest issued a statement confirming that he had ‘completed a season-long loan move’ before stating ‘we wish Jonjo the best for the remainder of the campaign.’
According to Rizespor’s Twitter account, Shelvey ‘passed a medical check at Istanbul Acibadem Altunizade Hospital’ earlier today, before he was pictured holding the Rizespor shirt alongside the club’s president Ibrahim Turgut and fellow new signing Adolfo Gaich.
The 31-year-old, whose contract at Forest will expire in 2024, is the latest player to leave Forest this summer, with Steve Cooper’s side having now offloaded 15 players as free agents, on loan deals and for cash sums.

They have strengthened their squad too, acquiring 11 new players including new central midfielder Ibrahim Sangare from PSV Eindhoven, an exciting prospect who could feature for the Garibaldi against Burnley on Monday.
Shevley, meanwhile, will put a pause on his time at the City Ground, with the former England international having only arrived at the club in January this year, after pleading with his former boss Eddie Howe to allow him to leave Newcastle.
Reluctantly, the English manager permitted Shelvey to leave St James’ Park, with the midfielder having only amassed three appearances for the Magpies at the start of the 2022-23 Premier League campaign.
He had hoped for a ‘fresh start’ at Forest but again he struggled to get game time under Cooper, making eight appearances for Cooper’s side, and hasn’t played for since April.
His absence from the side came after reports suggested that he had been left unhappy with the manager’s decision to drop him from Forest’s visit to Liverpool last season.
He was told to ‘stay at home’ by the Garibaldi boss, who was unimpressed by his attitude and performances in training but afterwards quashed any claims that there was ill feeling between the pair.
Shelvey notably did not travel with Forest to their pre-season training camp in Spain earlier this summer, and will now play out the remainder of the season with Turkish side Rizespor who currently sit fifth in the Super Lig.
