Joao Felix celebrated emphatically after scoring against his parent club Atletico Madrid for Barcelona in La Liga.

The Portuguese forward netted the only goal of the game, latching on to a through-ball and chipping former team-mate Jan Oblak from a tight angle in the 28th minute to seal three crucial points in the title race. But not many would have expected him to celebrate as passionately as he did against the club he represented for three-and-a-half seasons – and still belongs to.

Having seen the net bulge, Felix jumped onto the advertisement hoarding and stood there, arms aloft in Jude Bellingham-like fashion. The much-criticised 24-year-old finally felt vindicated after a turbulent spell under Diego Simeone which saw him openly criticised, sent out on loan to Chelsea and forced to train alone before the start of the season.

Explaining his celebration, Felix said post-match: "People have been talking about me all week, but I don't pay attention to that. I'm just doing my job. I don't care what people say, I work every day to become better.

“The celebration was spontaneous. It was a release of what I had been through last summer. It was for my family and my Barca team-mates who have welcomed me."

Much had been said about Felix and Atletico in the build-up, and the former Golden Boy winner had made sure to aim a thinly-veiled jibe at his former side, saying: "For sure [I prefer] this style [at Barcelona]- me and every player.

"If you ask every player, if you ask the players from Atlético, too, they would prefer to play more time on the attack, for sure. If they don't answer that, they are lying. Of course, every player wants to attack, wants to have the ball and to score goals."

It is unknown whether Barcelona will move to make Felix's transfer permanent at the end of the season due to their financial problems. Simeone had been publicly critical of Felix's failure to adapt to Atletico's style earlier this season, but maintained that there was still a place for him in the squad if he returned.

He said: "Some people at Atletico don’t like Felix’s attitude. When you don't understand the idiosyncrasies of where you are, it is very difficult to coexist together. It's like if I want to live like people live in Argentina, I have to live like they live in Spain."

"He's always been talented, but he struggles to track back and defend. But whatever good things happen to Joao Felix will be good for us.

“If he stays at Barcelona, we'll receive an important income. If he comes back, he has three years to prove what he improved elsewhere."
