Jamie Carragher has slammed Chelsea’s spending after considering the quality of their squad.
The Blues take on Fulham on Monday night in their latest bid to climb the Premier League after winning just one of their opening six matches, leaving them 15th in the league table.
They have spent over £1billion on transfers in just over a year of the co-ownership of Behdad Eghbali and Todd Boehly’s ownership, but are showing no signs of imminent progression this term.
Mauricio Pochettino has been brought in following Graham Potter’s sacking last season, but is yet to deliver on-field results in a period of frustration for the club.
Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports, acknowledged the Blues have injury problems but claimed their best team is still some way away from competing at the top end of the league.

‘You rarely get your best 11 on the pitch, they have injuries but if you get their team on the pitch regularly I believe they are fighting for top four,’ Carragher said. ‘If you tell me that is their best team after spending £1billion, they still need four players to make them capable of catching Man City.
‘Centre forward (Nicolas Jackson) isn’t good enough, goalkeeper (Robert Sanchez) isn’t good enough, centre-back and another midfielder. To think Chelsea have spent £1billion and still feel half a team away from competing for the Premier League is flabbergasting.’
Jackson arrived from Villarreal for £35million in the summer but has scored just one league so so far this season, missing a plethora of chances in the midst of picking up five yellow cards and an early suspension.

The Blues have won just one of their opening six games under Mauricio Pochettino in the Premier League this season
He has netted in the cup, but is yet to live up to expectations after scoring 13 goals in 48 games while in Spain.
Sanchez, meanwhile, has become the Blues’ first choice goalkeeper after arriving from Brighton in the summer and Kepa Arrizabalaga’s departure.
He has been a solid enough edition to the side, but arrives with little pedigree having found himself as third-choice goalkeeper at Brighton by the time he left the club.
Chelsea have taken the recent approach of investing in youth rather than proven stars and are yet to reap the awards, with several difficult fixtures coming up after the international break.
