Former Newcastle defender Florian Lejeune produced a sensational recovery to his Rayo Vallecano conceding in La Liga.

Rayo Vallecano had taken a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute through Alvaro García against the surprise league leaders.

The hosts had Lejeune to thank for producing a remarkable clearance to preserve the lead in the 22nd minute.

Girona appeared poised to score when striker Artem Dovbyk flicked a cross goalwards at the back post.

Lejeune had sprinted back to the line but had little time to react to Dovbyk’s effort, with the Ukrainian having been inches from the goal.

The French defender was able to stick out a leg and divert the ball onto the post as he fell backwards into the net.

Fortunately for Rayo Vallecano, the ball fell safely with Lejeune’s team-mates completing his remarkable recovery.

Dovbyk would eventually level the score for the visitors in the 42nd minute to leave the match at 1-1 in the first half.

Girona completed the comeback in the 65th minute through Savio to maintain their stunning start to the season.

The result keeps Girona at the top of La Liga, with Michel’s side having won 11 of the 13 matches this season.

Lejeune’s heroics were unable to prevent Rayo Vallecano from suffering their third defeat of the campaign.

Rayo remain ninth in LaLiga having won four and drawn six matches.
