Everton's survival chances have taken a gargantuan hit after the club was docked 10 points for breaching Financial Fair Play rules on Friday.

The Premier League dished out what is a record punishment after the findings from an independent commission, who heard the case over the club’s breach of profit and sustainability rules, were published. The Toffees say they'll challenge the decision, but for the time being they're back in the relegation zone.

They've dropped from 14th to 19th, and are only above bottom club Burnley on goal difference. Their plunge pushes Luton, who have won just one league game all season, out of the relegation zone into 17th place, and Sheffield United, who are also searching for win No. 2, up to 18th.

News of Everton's penalty will be similarly well received at Bournemouth, Fulham and Nottingham Forest, all of whom have moved up a place in the table. Frustratingly for Sean Dyche's side, the points deduction comes just as they were picking up steam.

They've won four of their last seven league games and have only been beaten once since September, and dropping down the table will be a major mental blow for the squad. That said, one win could conceivably move them out of the relegation zone, and as one fan on X put it: "Arguably, this is the 'best' season to receive a points deduction with Luton, Sheff Utd and Burnley all awful."

The investigation into Everton's finances came following an audit of all top-flight clubs’ financial records for the 2021/22 season. It is related to a tax issue from loans for Everton’s new stadium at Bramley-Moore dock, where they are meant to move into next season.

The Premier League allow clubs to lose a maximum of £105m over a three-year period. And Everton recorded losses of £371.8m over the previous three years. The 10 point deduction is the highest figure handed out in Premier League history, surpassing the nine Portsmouth got back in 2010.

After news of the penalty broke, Everton released a statement saying they were "shocked and disappointed" by the ruling. It read: "The Club believes that the Commission has imposed a wholly disproportionate and unjust sporting sanction.

"The Club has already communicated its intention to appeal the decision to the Premier League… Everton maintains that it has been open and transparent in the information it has provided to the Premier League and that it has always respected the integrity of the process.
