How many trophies has Tottenham Hotspur won? Last time Spurs claimed silverware

Tottenham’s hunt for silverware has been well-documented over the past decade as the club builds into a regular trophy contender in England and Europe.

While Spurs hibernated as a mid-table side through most of the 90’s, Spurs broke through as a consistent top-half club in the early 2000’s and began consistently challenging for European places starting in 2010 with a fourth-place finish. Since, Spurs have finished no worse than seventh in the Premier League.

Still, modern silverware has eluded Spurs as the club continues to forage for a major title. Despite a league standing of sixth at the turn of the new year, Antonio Conte has Spurs in the hunt this season, as the London side is still fighting in the EFL Cup semifinals, plus an FA Cup journey to begin against League One side Morecambe in January.

When is the last time Tottenham won a trophy?

Spurs have won silverware in the past, but it has been some time. The most recent trophy the club has won is the League Cup in 2008 (Carling Cup, later to be called Carabao Cup), beating Chelsea 2-1 in the final after extra time.

Goals from Dimitar Berbatov and Jonathan Woodgate saw Spurs through in that match, with the latter coming four minutes into the extra period. Notable names in the Spurs lineup for that match include Jermaine Jenas and Robbie Keane, with Ledley King as captain and England international Paul Robinson in goal. They beat the likes of Petr Cech, Didier Drogba, and Frank Lampard who all started the game for Chelsea.

In the run-up to the final, Spurs topped Middlesbrough, Blackpool, and Manchester City all by 2-0 scorelines. They then topped North London rivals Arsenal in the semifinals. Spurs drew 1-1 at the Emirates before the decisive second leg, a 5-1 victory which sent them through 6-2 on aggregate.

What trophies has Tottenham won?

Prior to the 2007-08 EFL Cup victory, Spurs has a number of competition victories under its belt, but most of them came some time ago.

Tottenham won an FA Cup back in 1991, topping Roy Keane and Nottingham Forest in the final 2-1, and also in extra time. Terry Venables was in charge and chose Gary Lineker to start for Spurs up front, but the winner came via an own-goal as Des Walker put the ball in his own net.

The last league title goes all the way back to 1961, when the top five was rounded out by Sheffield Wednesday, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Burnley, and Everton.

How many finals have Spurs made?

Spurs have also come agonizingly close to winning silverware on several other occasions in addition to the 14 cup finals listed above.

In fact, Tottenham has had a number of close calls recently, losing in the EFL Cup final three times since last hoisting the trophy in 2008. Most recently, Spurs fell to Manchester City in the 2021 final, falling 1-0 thanks to a goal by defender Aymeric Laporte. Spurs also lost in the 2015 edition, and in the 2009 final.

In the FA Cup, Spurs have been wildly successful when reaching the final. They have only lost once, in 1987, while winning the competition the other eight times they reached the final.

Famously, Tottenham also lost in the UEFA Champions League final to Liverpool in 2019, losing 2-0 in the club’s first foray that deep in the tournament’s bracket.
