Hojlund ‘lies’ rejected by San Marino who deny ‘trying to injure’ Man Utd ace

San Marino have angrily hit back at Rasmus Hojlund after the Manchester United ace accused the minnows of trying to injure him.

Hojlund was among the scorers as Denmark only just avoided major embarrassment by edging to a 2-1 victory over the tiny principality, whose equaliser was their first goal in two years. After the game, former Atalanta striker Hojlund slammed San Marino for what he saw as an overly-physical approach.

“I feel they targeted me, as you can see at the end,” said Hojlund, who shushed his opponents after finding the net. “I understand Italian and I could hear them saying that they had the idea to crush me.”

The 20-year-old then took to social media to take another swipe at the San Marino players. On his Instagram story, Hojlund wrote: “We do so much everyday to be the best version of yourself and keep fit for so many games. This behaviour from San Marino last night, trying to injure me was unacceptable!”

Those incendiary claims were rejected by San Marino player Alessandro Tosi, although the defender did admit he and his team-mates were annoyed by Hojlund’s goal celebration.

“That's not true,” Tosi told reporters when asked about Hojlund's claims after the Euro 2024 qualifier. “We only told him that he was not behaving properly. What he did was not necessary. He is a very strong striker, but he was not fair at all.

“I haven't lost respect for him completely, but we expected better behaviour. His behaviour when celebrating was unacceptable.”

Tosi said he was surprised by Hojlund's complaints given he plays in a league as physical as the Premier League. He added: “Hojlund plays in a league against defenders who are far more skilled, physical and tougher than us, so he should be used to these kinds of duels.”
