Gylfi Sigurdsson breaks silence and returns to football after Everton exit

Gylfi Sigurdsson has broken his silence after completing his return to football at Danish side Lyngby.

Sigurdsson, 33, had been without a club since he left Everton at the end of the 2021/22 season after his contract wasn’t extended at Goodison Park.

The 78-time Iceland international joined Everton in 2017 from Swansea City in a club-record £40million deal, Sigurdsson also played for Tottenham Hotspur and racked up 318 Premier League appearances across 10 years.

Sigurdsson last played a competitive game during Everton’s 5-0 defeat on the final day of the 2020/21 season against Manchester City, but Lyngby have now offered him a way back.

The creative midfielder has penned a 12-month contract in Denmark and spoke of his excitement about returning to football.

Sigurdsson said: “I hope that I can come in and contribute with a lot of experience and quality.

“I know that there are a lot of young and talented players in the team, and I really want to learn from me so that we can lift ourselves up together.

“I have been very well received by the boys in the squad and they seem fantastic. I sense that it is a very well-balanced squad, and I am very happy to be here.”

Sigurdsson’s delight at signing is also shared in the boardroom by club director Nicas Kjeldsen.

He said on the coup: “There is no doubt that we are incredibly proud and happy that we can present Gylfi Sigurdsson as a Lyngby player,' club director Nicas Kjeldsen said.

“Gylfi is a player from a tier that we cannot normally bring players from, which is why it is a testament to our club, environment and great development that we can attract a player of his quality.

“Gylfi has not played football in the past few years, which is why we will, of course, be patient with him.”
