Gerard Pique a serious doubt for Barcelona’s Champions League second-leg against PSG after picking up knee injury in Copa del Rey win over Sevilla… having just come back from three-months on the sidelines

- Pique is now a doubt for Barcelona’s Champions League tie with PSG next week
Gerard Pique is a doubt for Barcelona’s Champions League second-leg with Paris Saint-Germain next week after picking up a knee injury against Sevilla on Wednesday.
The 34-year-old played a key role in the Catalans’ Copa del Rey semi-final victory, scoring an injury-time header to level the tie 2-2 on aggregate after Barcelona went into Wednesday’s second-leg 2-0 down.
Ronald Koeman’s side went through 3-2 on aggregate after Martin Braithwaite’s extra-time winner but Barcelona confirmed that Pique had suffered a reoccurrence of the knee problems that plagued him earlier on in the season.

A Barcelona statement read on Thursday: ‘The medical assessment and tests performed this morning have shown that first team player Gerard Pique has a sprain in the internal lateral ligament of his right knee.
‘He is therefore unavailable and the evolution of the injury will determine when he returns.’
Pique was ruled out for several months with a knee problem last November and only returned from the treatment table a fortnight ago.

The ligament problems have limited the defender to just 15 appearances in all competitions so far this season. Barcelona have lost just three times since the beginning of the season when Pique has started a match.
The injury blow comes at a cruel time for Koeman’s squad who have managed to put their season back on track after a difficult start.
Wednesday’s Copa del Rey victory means they will contest April’s final against one of Athletic Bilbao or Levante, which would be their first trophy win since 2019 should they win that match.

Koeman’s side have also lifted themselves up to second in the LaLiga table and just five points behind leaders Atletico Madrid – who have a game in hand – but Diego Simeone’s side could drop more points against city rivals Real Madrid this weekend.
Barcelona will have to do something special, however, to get past PSG in the Champions League round of last-16 as the Catalans are 4-1 down on aggregate after a first-leg mauling.
The result means Barcelona need to score four goals at the Parc des Princes next week to stand any chance of qualifying for the next round – though they were faced with that challenge against PSG in the 2016-17 Champions League when they beat their French opponents 6-1.
