Gazza reacts to ‘boss’ Terry Venables’ tragic death after special relationship

Paul Gascoigne paid tribute to "boss" Terry Venables in true Gazza style following his death aged 80.

News broke on Sunday (November 26) that former England boss Venables had passed away. Tributes were soon flooding in from the footballing world.

Gascoigne, who worked under him at Tottenham from 1988-91 as well as for the national team, took to X, formerly Twitter, and posted a picture of Venables as Three Lions boss with a cuppa in his hand.

He captioned the upload: "Such a sad day, cheers boss xxxx." The pair built up a special relationship which extended far beyond the pitch.

Gascoigne called his old manager when he was at his lowest point, under arrest at a west London police station amid his battles with alcoholism.

Venables was met with a worrying sight. He previously recalled: "His stare was chilling and he frightened the life out of me. He simply said, 'I want to kill myself'.

"It was an awful moment and I have no doubt he knew what he was saying. I told him I wouldn't let that happen."

Venables also penned an emotional plea to Gazza to stop drinking. "Something had to be done. I can't stand by and let it run until we all end up at his funeral," he wrote.

"Paul, if you read this, then take it as a wake-up call. You know me well enough to know this is from the heart and not something I ever dreamed I'd have to do, or say.

"I remember a Paul Gascoigne who lit up the country with his football genius and personality…I want that Paul Gascoigne back. So do your friends and family and I believe, the whole country. Get treated. And get well, my friend."

Gascoigne heeded Venables' advice and checked himself into rehab, gaining control of his alcohol addiction and mental health struggles.
