Garnacho may be set for awkward Man Utd reunion as Sheikh Jassim approves

Erik ten Hag assesses impressive Alejandro Garnacho

It has emerged that Manchester United are interested in signing Ronald Araujo this summer. And should the Red Devils swoop for the Barcelona star, then Alejandro Garnacho would be set for an awkward reunion. The teenager angered the Uruguay international earlier in the season with his antics following a 2-1 Europa League win.

It was reported on Saturday that Araujo was being eyed, with Sheikh Jassim approving the Glazers’ transfer policy amid a potential takeover.

The Qatari billionaire is happy for the Americans to proceed with their plans while negotiations drag on as he looks to purchase the club.

And Araujo gets a mention, with United apparently hoping to sign the Barcelona star at the end of the season.

Should that happen, then the 24-year-old would become team-mates with Garnacho.

And that would mean the pair having an awkward reunion following what happened earlier in the campaign.

Man Utd transfers: Ten Hag wants another Pogba and it makes sense

Back in February, the Red Devils beat Barcelona 2-1 in the Europa League thanks to goals from Fred and Antony.

And Garnacho rubbed salt into the Catalan giants’ wounds by mocking Pedri by copying the midfielder’s binoculars celebration.

It was a gesture that angered Araujo and, speaking the following month, the Barcelona star admitted he was left unhappy by the teenager’s actions.

“Yes,” he said when asked if Garnacho’s behaviour annoyed him.

“Everyone is as they are, but at that time, it should not have been possible to post something like that.

“This is football, he is very young and there is still a long way to go. You have to proceed calmly and humbly.”

Amid Sheikh Jassim’s decision to let the Glazers crack on with potential transfer business, United could go big this summer.

Meanwhile, De Jong has spoken out on his failed move to United last summer.

Speaking after Barcelona won La Liga, he said: “Manchester United already spoke with Barcelona [last summer] despite the fact that I wanted to stay here.”

He added: “The club was in a difficult situation.

“They were able to sell me for a big fee, and they wanted to do this, but I did not want to leave so I stayed.

“If everything goes well for me and for the club, then I want to stay here for as long as possible.”
