Garnacho labelled ‘a clown’ after Man Utd star almost wrecks penalty spot again

Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho has been called a “clown” following Wednesday’s damaging Champions League defeat. FC Copenhagen players have given a damning verdict on the youngster after he attempted to scuff the penalty spot again.

Garnacho played the whole 90 minutes as Copenhagen won 4-3 in a dramatic encounter in Denmark. The hosts came from behind twice and scored two late goals to turn the game on its head.

United had led 2-0 before Marcus Rashford was controversially sent off after a VAR intervention. Copenhagen immediately pulled one back before they were awarded a penalty after Harry Maguire was adjudged to have handled in his own area.

Garnacho was seen scuffing up the penalty spot in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford two weeks ago before Jordan Larsson saw his stoppage-time effort saved by Andre Onana. Copenhagen players were wise to him doing that again on Wednesday.

Defender Denis Vavro has called Garnacho out, claiming it was childish behaviour from the 19-year-old. Vavro told bold.dk: “I saw that he tried to do something about the penalty kick, but Kevin Diks stood in front and blocked.

“It is the second time. And then [he tries doing it] on our pitch? To me he is a clown. He has the mentality of a child when he tries something like this again. In an away game.

“One thing is at home in the 97th minute, but here in the first half. I don’t understand him trying to do that.”

Lukas Lerager scored Copenhagen’s equaliser to make the game 3-3. He didn’t see Garnacho trying to scuff the penalty spot but he criticised the teenager for his in-game tactics and told him his opinion during the match.

Lerager said: “Sometimes people in the big clubs have to bow their heads a little. Just know that they are human too.

“And then there is just a situation where I take the ball from him inside the field, where he throws himself, and then I tell him some things that are not so nice, but still with respect for him as a person.

“It just doesn’t suit such a man. And then they need to know.”

One of Garnacho’s actions came back to haunt him after he shushed the Copenhagen supporters once Bruno Fernandes had scored to make it 3-2 to United. He looked desolate at the final whistle as the realisation of another defeat set in.
