Frank Lampard confirms double Chelsea blow for Newcastle clash with Ben Chilwell update

Frank Lampard has confirmed two players will miss Chelsea’s trip to St James’ Park on Saturday while also providing an update on Ben Chilwell’s injury situation. The Blues entered the international break in fine form having won four consecutive matches.

They’d scored 14 goals in the process while conceding just one and will be hoping to continue that form against Newcastle.

But Lampard will only have a couple of training sessions with his full squad with players still returning from international duty.

Thiago Silva has been key to Chelsea’s success recently and he played both games for Brazil during the international break.

The 36-year-old has only just returned to Cobham today though and Lampard confirmed he will not feature against Newcastle.

Christian Pulisic is still not fit enough to return either, although Kai Havertz is now back in contention to play.

“Pulisic is not fit for Newcastle but has stepped up his training,” he said.

“Havertz is back, isolation is over and tested negative so trained two days ago to get individually his fitness back.

“Silva has just landed, he probably won’t go to Newcastle because of the journey.

“Still waiting on some covid testing.

“Unfortunately some are arriving back this afternoon, so with the 12.30pm kick off it brings a lot of challenges.”

Ben Chilwell picked up a back injury on England duty, but Lampard is confident the left-back will be fit to play this weekend.

“I haven’t seen him yet,” he said.

“I am positive that he will be OK but I’ll have to see later today.”

Chilwell was fit enough to be named on the bench for England’s 4-0 win over Iceland on Wednesday night.

Chelsea currently sit eighth in the Premier League and a win on Saturday could take them top of the table.
