Ferran Torres snubbed a move to Manchester United before joining Manchester City this summer, according to reports in Spain.
The Spanish winger secured a £21million switch to City from Valencia last month, putting pen to paper on a five-year contract at the Etihad.
Pep Guardiola was keen to add another wide player to his ranks following the departure of Leroy Sane, who left to join Bayern Munich earlier this year.
In Torres, City have got their hands on one of Spain’s most highly-rated young prospects, and AS claim they even beat arch-rivals United to his signature.
The Spanish outlet report that United identified him as a cheaper alternative to Jadon Sancho, who Borussia Dortmund are not prepared to offload for anything less than £108million.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and co are understood to have opened talks with Torres, yet in the end City’s sporting project convinced him to reject their advances and join Guardiola’s side instead.
As a result, United are still on the hunt for a new winger in the summer transfer window, with just under three weeks remaining until it closes.
The Red Devils are still trying to prise Sancho away from Dortmund, but if that proves unsuccessful Daily Star Sport understands they will turn their attention to Real Madrid outcast Gareth Bale.
Bale, 31, has been deemed surplus to requirements by Los Blancos boss Zinedine Zidane and is therefore up for sale this summer.
The Spanish giants are desperate to get his £600,000-a-week wages off their books – so much so that they are even prepared to continue paying half of them.
