Ferguson ‘washed and massaged Man Utd players’ legs’ during training sessions

Former Manchester United player Clayton Blackmore has revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson used to help give players massages when he first became manager because the club "didn't have staff".

Blackmore made his United debut under Ron Atkinson and worked with Ferguson during the Scotsman's first eight years at Old Trafford.

Speaking to United's official podcast, Blackmore explained that Ferguson immediately tried to make changes, saying: "Straight away, he tried to stamp the drinking culture out.

"The manager was way ahead of himself. He started bringing us in on a Sunday to get rid of the lactic acid, which was never done before."

He added: "With the amount of staff we had, he was massaging our legs, the gaffer was. The gaffer, [assistant coach] Archie [Knox] and Jim McGregor.

"I mean, he's washed my legs once before. As soon as he touched them, it was in the newspapers the next day. We didn't have staff, did we? We only had Jim McGregor, the physio, then we had Sir Alex and Archie.

"On a normal day, if he wasn't doing it, the kitman would. Normally he had way too much stuff to do."

Ferguson's career will be revisited in a new documentary titled 'Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In' which will be released on Amazon Prime later this year.

The 79-year-old recently explained the reasons behind the documentary, saying: "Losing my memory was my biggest fear when I suffered a brain haemorrhage.
